Road Race, Softball and a President Highlight Plains Peanut Festival

Exercise and a healthy diet that includes peanuts can put you on the road to a fit, fun and healthy lifestyle. Come join us at the Plains Peanut Festival September 23 and 24, 2000 in Plains, Georgia.

The Saturday 5K Road Race and One Mile Fun Run will draw contestants from all over south Georgia. Contestants will run in age groups with trophies and awards for each group. The presentation of awards will take place on the Train Depot platform on Main Street in Plains with President Jimmy Carter scheduled to make the presentations. Bring your camera!

The festival themed "Plains, Peanuts & a President" is centered around the most famous residents of this peanut-producing farm community. People line the streets for the race awards featuring Carter and stay for the unique parade down Main Street with Mr. Peanut, famous peanut mascot of Planter's Nuts, as Grand Marshal.

Plan to stay over for Sunday afternoon to see the most famous softball pitcher in Georgia and his secret service men take on the a local team of Plains High School alumni. No one knows for sure who leads in this annual series played at 3:00 p.m. on the field at the Plains High School Historic Site.

President Carter is a "gifted" pitcher for his Secret Service All Stars and always seems to get "competitive" when the game begins. The Plains High School Alumni All Star team is coached by Billy McClung, a Plains High School graduate better known for his time as Plains Police Chief during the Carter campaign. McClung and Carter insist that no "ringers" ever have played in the game, although some players may not have seen the high school more then ten minutes before the first pitch.

Bring your lawn chairs for a pleasant afternoon in Plains that will take you back in time when farm communities had no television and made their own entertainment. Where else will you see a former president of the United States and his high school friends in a friendly softball game?

Plan to be in Plains Saturday and Sunday September 23 an 24, 2000 to enjoy a good time, meet some famous people and check out the heart healthy peanuts that helped make President Carter the most famous peanut farmer in America.
