Peanuts Fit 6 of the Top 10 Food Trends for 2012 Well!

“Supermarket Guru” Phil Lempert has released his Top 10 Food Trends for 2012. His trends range from focusing on convenience and cost to health and variety. Here are six of Lemperts trends for 2012 and how peanuts and peanut butter fit with these trends

“Food Prices”. Food prices are on the rise, but as America’s favorite nut, peanuts and peanut butter continue to be an inexpensive protein source.

“The Baby Boomers keep right on truckin’”. Baby boomers are the largest food influencers and purchasers and are more and more interested in foods with health benefits as they age. Peanuts, especially peanut skins, contain resveratrol, which has been found to have anti-aging properties and protect cells from being damaged. Peanuts and peanut butter also contain B-vitamins that many seniors are missing; these vitamins are important for memory and cognition

“The ethnic food revolution”. Many shoppers are becoming more adventurous when it comes to their cooking and are preparing more ethnic cuisines. Peanuts are enjoyed all over the world in many recipes such as Chicken Satay with peanut sauce and Pad Thai with crushed peanuts.

“The new role of the male shopper”. Men are cooking for their families now more than ever before. Men in search of preparing healthful, kid friendly meals should look no further than the peanut butter sandwich! Not only is it easy to prepare, but it is also totally nutritious with 15g of protein, 6g of fiber, 70 mg of calcium, and only 18g of fat. Peanut butter is a great way to get kids to eat other healthy foods like fruits, veggies, and milk too!

“Eating at home – Xtreme Home Cooking”. Shoppers are looking for the best ways to save money and make their food go the furthest. One 16 oz jar of peanut butter will easily produce about 14 peanut butter sandwiches.

“How sweet it isn’t”. In suit with the 2010 Dietary Guidelines, Lempert recommends reducing the amount of added sugars. One serving of peanuts contains about only about 1g of sugar and one serving of peanut butter contains less than 3g of sugar.

Peanuts are a delicious, healthy, nutrient-dense, easy, and inexpensive food, no matter what food trend you plan to follow this year!
